An extra large size sterling silver easel back photograph frame. This is an exceptional example of a sterling silver photograph frame one is likely to find. Simple in design, so as to not detract from the determined content, but masterfully made. The two swinging catches open out to free the wooden dark bottle green velvet covered back, this then slides down through a gap in the base of the frame, then allowing it to be angled out for adding the photograph. Very simple, and neat, and most unusual to find in such a large size. There is a reeded edge both toward the inner edge and outer giving the frame a slight, but reserved detail.
The frame, although being complete with no decoration or ornamentation, is of the highest quality. A very thick gauge of sterling is used throughout, and the frame is in exceptional condition. On the base of the frame are a wonderful full set of Cartier USA marks with registration numbers and reference number, along with the 'MS' initial. Above this is the makers mark stamped for The McChesney Co., Newark, NJ. This silversmith's did not have a long independent life, operating from 1921 to 1926. McChesney was one of the original founders of Kerr. The firm was taken over by Dominick & Haff in 1926, in short succession it was resold to Reed & Barton, and finally was in the hands of Gorham by 1931. The McChesney Co. pridcued a small number of pieces for Cartier during their short run in the early 1920's, with a few of them coming up for sale over the years. Very rarely does one find photograph frames.
The condition of the frame is superb throughout, having come from a private home with a collection of two others. Circa early 1920's, made in America.
